The Public Works Department operates and maintains the wastewater system in Rexton, provides snow clearing services for sidewalks and municipal properties in Rexton, and maintains municipal parks, fields, centres, and other properties in Rexton, including Kenney Park, Carson’s Landing, the Recreation Centre, the Splash Pad, the outdoor rink and Bonar Law Commons Park. What services does Five Rivers provide indirectly?
Five Rivers provides several core services through the Kent Regional Service Commission, including planning, building inspection, by-law enforcement, waste management, and street flushing. Five Rivers also provides services through contracts and agreements with external service providers. For example, it provides policing services through the RCMP under a provincially administered agreement.
Does the Municipality look after all streets and roads in Five Rivers?
No. Five Rivers is responsible to look after the roads and streets in the former village of Rexton, except for designated highways, which include Route 134 and Route 116. Outside Rexton, in the former LSDs Harcourt, Weldford, and Richibucto Parish, the province is responsible to repair and maintain the roads. This road repair and maintenance service is funded by a provincial tax of 41 cents per $100 of property assessment value.
If I live in a former LSD, will I have to pay to look after streets and roads in Rexton?
No. In our general operating budget, transportation costs (labor, machines, materials, other) to maintain the streets and roads of Rexton are not shared with (or passed on to) the residents of former LSDs.
Who looks after the bridges in Five Rivers?
The repair and maintenance of all bridges in New Brunswick, including all bridges in Five Rivers, is the responsibility of the province of New Brunswick?
If I live in a former LSD and do not receive sewer service from Five Rivers, will I have to pay for it?
No. In all New Brunswick municipalities, the cost to provide sewer service is covered in full by sewer user fees, not property taxes. So, if you are not receiving sewer services from Five Rivers, then you will not be pay these fees.
